Chapter 7: Vows and Conduct
7.1
Violence (himsa), falsehood (anrita), theft (steya), unchastity (abrahma), and attachment to possessions (parigraha) are the sins that cause the influx of negative karma.
7.2
Abstaining completely from these five sins constitutes the Great Vows (Mahavrata) of the ascetic.
7.4
To practice the vow of non-violence (Ahimsa), one must cultivate carefulness in speech, carefulness in thought, care in regulating movement, and care in lifting and laying down things.
7.5
To practice the vow of truthfulness (Satya), one must abandon anger, greed, cowardice, and jest.
7.6
To practice the vow of non-stealing (Asteya), one must seek permission before taking anything, avoid disputes over property, and respect the boundaries of others.
7.13
The severance of vitalities out of passion is violence.
7.18
Inflicting pain, inducing regret, causing sorrow, causing agony, and tearing a living being are actions that bring bad karma and must be avoided.
