The Five Articles of Samaritan Faith
1. One God (YHWH)
"There is only one God, the God of Israel, who is the creator of the world and has no associates."
2. One Prophet (Moses)
"Moses ben Amram is the only true prophet. He is the ultimate servant of God, to whom the complete and final truth was revealed."
3. One Book (The Torah)
"The Torah (Pentateuch) is the only divinely inspired holy book. It is complete and perfect. Writings of later prophets are rejected as holy scripture."
4. One Holy Place (Mount Gerizim)
"Mount Gerizim is the chosen place of God. It is the true site of the sanctuary and the only legitimate place for the altar and sacrifice, not Jerusalem."
5. The Day of Vengeance and Reward (Taheb)
"Belief in a Day of Judgment when the righteous will be rewarded and the wicked punished. A restorer/messiah figure known as the 'Taheb' (from the tribe of Joseph) will appear to restore pure worship on Mount Gerizim."
The Samaritan Tenth Commandment
In the Samaritan Pentateuch, the First Commandment ("I am the Lord thy God") functions as a preamble, and the prohibition against other gods and idols is grouped as the first commandment. This leaves the 10th spot open for a unique commandment found only in their version of Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5:
"And it shall come to pass when the Lord your God will bring you into the land of the Canaanites... you shall set up for yourselves large stones and plaster them with plaster... and you shall build there an altar to the Lord your God... upon Mount Gerizim."
